The Linnets began 2020 in tremendous style with this fantastic New Year’s Day victory over Boston United at York Street. The win maintained town’s four point advantage at the top of the Vanarama National League North and also completed a holiday double over The Pilgrims who were beaten by a single goal at The Walks on Boxing Day.
Ian Culverhouse made four changes to the team that started against Alfreton, with Ross Barrows, Ryan Jarvis, Sam Kelly & Chris Henderson starting in place of Tom Ward, Ryan Hawkins, Alfie Payne & Sonny Carey. Harry Limb returned to the bench following illness and a loan spell at Boston Town.
As was to be expected the home team began strongly with The Linnets collecting early bookings for Ross Barrows and Michael Gash. Sam Kelly was then withdrawn with a calf injury and replaced by Sonny Carey as Lynn began to draw the early Boston sting. Chris Henderson fired over the bar as Town began to seize control and the first goal duly arrived from the reliable source of Adam Marriott who broke the home offside trap before firing comfortably beyond Peter Crook against his former side. Crook then denied Henderson but The Linnets were two ahead a minute before the break after a good visiting move was rounded off by Jordan Richards who applied a cool finish from the edge of the box.
Lynn continued to assert their grip on the game in the second half with the home team restricted to half chances. In fact it was the visitors who had the better chances with Marriott firing wide and crook saving from Gash. However Gash grabbed the goal his play deserved 10 minutes from time as he smashed home Marriott’s cut back on the line to extinguish any lingering hope of a home comeback.
