Lynn Ladies bowed out of the Norfolk Women’s County Cup on Sunday losing a heartbreaking penalty shoot out 4 – 3 at The Walks to Wroxham Women.
In front of an encouraging crowd of 156 the opening 40 minutes saw both sides creating few opening’s with Lynn more than matching their higher level opponents. Shortly before the interval the visitors took the lead. However with first half time quickly running out Tiff Forshaw levelled things up with a fantastic 30 yard strike from the angle , giving the keeper no chance.
The second half was again an even affair with both teams working hard in an attempt to win the game. With fifteen minutes remaining the home team thought they had done just that as captain Becky Russell struck a stunning 40 yard drive past the keeper with the help of the underside of the bar to send The Walks into raptures. With time rapidly running out the visitors grabbed an equaliser following a fumble by keeper Bryony Robinson.
Both teams were now tiring in the difficult conditions and despite further chances at both ends there was no further addition to the score meaning the match would be decided on penalties. Missed efforts from Jodie Hopkins and Katie Ward allowed Wroxham to win the shoot out and progress to the quarter finals of the county competition.
A disappointing end to the game for the home team however they will take heart from a fine , hardworking performance against higher level opposition. All at the club would like to place on record their thanks to all who turned out to support them on Sunday.
