King’s Lynn Town travelled to South Wales to face Merthyr Town, looking to make it four straight wins in a row. However, the points were shared as the game ended 1-1.
The Linnets started the game on the front foot, having plenty of the ball in the early stages and pressing Merthyr high up the pitch when they didn’t have possession.
Michael Clunan came close to finding the net in the opening ten minutes, as a short corner routine from Ryan Tunnicliffe found the Linnets skipper on the edge of the area, whose first-time effort curled just wide of the top-left corner.
The Linnets’ best chance of the first half came in the 24th minute, as Ed Leach and Nwabueze combined on the wing, allowing Nwabueze to float a cross to the back post and find Carlton Ubaezuonu, whose header was denied by the post.
Five minutes later, and firmly against the run of play, Merthyr took the lead as Ben Margetson’s header at the near post found the back of the net.
The goal shifted the momentum in the closing stages of the first half, as Merthyr began to take control.
Merthyr very nearly had a second before the break, as Sam Pearson found himself one-on-one with Hollingshead. Pearson opted to shoot at the near post, only to be denied by a fine stop from the Linnets’ number one.
The second half started with the hosts once again searching for their second goal, but a huge block on the line from Zak Mills denied Maddox, keeping the score at 1-0.
Three early second-half chances for the Linnets saw the momentum begin to swing the other way once again, as they searched for an equaliser. Reece Hall-Johnson came close with a half-volley, but his effort was well saved by Cogman.
In the 67th minute, the Linnets were awarded a penalty after Jesse Nwabueze was brought down in the area. Nwabueze stepped up to the spot, but saw his penalty saved by Jaimie Cogman.
However, two minutes later, the Linnets did find their equaliser, as Cogman spilled a powerful effort from Tunnicliffe into the path of Kwame Thomas, who blasted the ball home to draw the game level.
The Linnets had a number of good chances to steal all three points, with Harley Hamilton going close after Nwabueze found him unmarked in the box. However, his header could not find the target.
Hamilton went close again in added time, as he found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He tried to poke the ball around the goalkeeper and into the far corner, but his effort just went wide as the game ended level.
A huge thank you to our fans who travelled the long journey to South Wales. Your support is always appreciated.
